FRIENDS OF THE WIMBERLEY VILLAGE LIBRARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Wednesday, October 12, 2011, 3:30 p.m.
MEETING MINUTES

A.  Call to Order: President Shirley Schliessmann called the meeting to order at 3:30 pm.

B.  Roll Call: Recording Secretary Carol Plassmann declared a quorum with 12 of 13 members present.  In attendance: Lynda Blakistone, Paula Conley, Lisa Czarnecki, Tonda Frady, Ruth Freeman, Kathleen Goodson, Kathie Parker, Carol Plassmann, Shirley Schliessmann, Alice Wightman, Kathleen Young. Carolyn Manning was present as the library?s representative.  Absent: Roseann Mandziuk

C.  Approval of Minutes: A motion was made by Tonda Frady, seconded by Lisa Czarnecki to approve the September 14 minutes with the following correction: Under Special Events change the word "clubs" to "organizations."  Motion carried.

D.  Reports
1.   Officers
a. Treasurer: Ruth Freeman reported $1,000 in new memberships, $957.75 from the quilt raffle, and $3,268.05 from the book sale. The Chapel was paid $487.21 to the Chapel, leaving a checking balance of $13,982.91. Carolyn will compose a wish list for next month for the board to consider spending some of the extra money. The board will also discuss whether or not to roll over the CD that will come due in November. A motion was made by Lynda Blakistone and seconded by Kathleen Young to accept the financial report. Motion carried.

b. Recording Secretary (Carol Plassmann): No report.

c.  Corresponding Secretary (Tonda Frady): Notes were sent to patron-level donors Temple Wynn and  Frank and Sue Byrne. Notes were also sent to all participants of the organizations open house.

2.  Standing Committees
a.  Membership (Kathie Parker): Kathie reported that we have 219 paid members with 50% of the members being active volunteers. Paula?s emails helped obtain new members. 

b.  Publicity (Kathleen Goodson/Roseann Mandziuk): Kathleen reported that she will begin gathering items for the spring newsletter. An article about the book sale with a picture of the quilt winner and about the two upcoming events was sent to the newspaper.

c.  Volunteers / Youth Activities (Tonda/Kathleen G.): Tonda reported she and Kathleen Goodson have a theme for the volunteer luncheon next year which will be "Volunteers Rock."

d.  Book Sales (Lynda Blakistone): Lynda reported that books are already coming in for next year.  She reminded members to pick up boxes of remaining books to sell at Half Price Books. Comments heard from the book sale were that it was the best ever, very organized and the best prices. The Chapel has been reserved for next year's sale October 4, 5, and 6.

e.   Special Events:  Infobrunches (Kathie Parker): October 17 is Beyond Scrapbooking and November 9 is the Old Oaks Ranch presentation. Kathleen is working on posters. Kathie also said that the Friends are being strongly encouraged to participate in the Trail of Lights. 

f.  Garden (Carolyn Manning): No report.

3.  Special Reports
a.  Board of Trustees (Alice Wightman): No report.
b.  Library Director (Carolyn Manning): There was a $500 donation from Kiss the Cook. The Garden Club is building and donating a water collection system in the front of the library where there are no sprinklers. Kathleen Goodson has added a new book club for children called The Magic Tree House. Carolyn is starting a new awareness program for the library called Geek the Library which connects the library to the community. T shirts and articles in the newspaper will advertise.

E.  Old Business
1.  Nominating Committee: Navarro Replacement:  No report.

2.  Bastrop/Smithville Disaster Relief Effort: Consensus was that the Burning Love jar donations collected at the book sale will be sufficient at this time.

3.  Approval of National Friends Week Purchases: Kathleen Young, Paula Conley and Carolyn Manning ordered posters, buttons for staff and bookmarks to be given out at the circulation desk during the week.  A motion was made by Kathie Parker and seconded by Lynda Blakistone to approve the $135 spent for these items. Motion carried. Library staff will be treating the Friends board to a potluck luncheon on October 18 from 11:00 until 1:00.

4.  Logo: A motion was made by Paula Conley, seconded by Lisa Czarnecki, to accept logo number 7. Paula and Lisa will look into printing t-shirts and bags.  Also new note cards need to be printed. January would be a good time to start selling our new items. A motion was made by Paula Conley, seconded by Lisa Czarnecki, to buy a $75 gift certificate to Palmer's restaurant for the graphic artist who designed the logo. Motion carried.

F.  New Business
1.  2012 Budget Planning: Ruth Freeman asked committee chairs to submit their budget requests to her before the end of October. The Budget Committee will then prepare a proposed budget for 2012 for the board's review at the November meeting.

G.  Announcements
1.   Book Storage Situation: No space is available now.
2.   November Market Day Workers: A letter from the Lions Club was received giving a donation of $1,000 in the fall and $500 in the spring.
  
H.  Adjournment: A motion to adjourn was made by Tonda Frady and seconded by Carolyn Manning. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 4:30 p.m.
