Friends of the Wimberley Village Library Board Meeting

Regular Meeting – November 18, 2006

Wimberley Village Library, 400 FM 2325, Wimberley, TX 78676

 

Present: Lynda Blakistone, Ruth Freeman, Linda Germain, Marty Jeffers, Marianne Mitchell, Steve Schubert, Melody Valadez, Suzy Valadez, and Nancy Wesson.  Sue Byrne was present as the ex-officio member from the Wimberley Village Library Board of Trustees.  Carolyn Manning was present to represent the library.

 

The meeting was called to order at 1:05 PM.

 

The October minutes were changed and approved as changed.

 

OFFICERS’ REPORTS

 

Treasurer’s Report: Ruth Freeman (treasurer) reported that $500 has not been given to the Wimberley Village Library as was decided during the October meeting.  Steve Schubert reported that giving the money was not necessary.  The current balance is $5,852.07

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS

 

Book Sale Committee: Because Judy Sanford (chair) was unable to attend, Lynda Blakistone reported that the November book sale was a great success; it brought in over $1500.  The committee will be looking into having the 2007 sale on Market Day, and the projected dates for 2007 are April 7th and November 3rd.  Donations of books for the April book sale have already begun, and all future book donations should be brought to the library.

Work is on going for the Donation Drive for gift books program, which was first introduced to the general public at the FOWVL Toddler Storytime and the Alternative Market Day.  The committee hopes to have an article in the Wimberley View and the Dripping Springs/Wimberley Dispatch [MV1]  the week following Thanksgiving.  The article would further explain and publicize the program, which will be an ongoing project throughout the coming year.  Plans will be getting under way soon to start a online eBay shopping site for collectibles and first editions.

At the Alternative Market, $133.80 in six books, one t-shirt, and one book bag.

 

Volunteer Committee: Kaysa Pierce (chair) reported that six people had attended the Volunteer Recruitment Roundup, and all six had signed up to volunteer.  Four of them signed up to be Friends of the Wimberley Village Library.  Steve Schubert gave the walking tour.

The committee wishes to being sending birthday cards to all the volunteers.  They are also working on the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon that will take place in April.

 

Youth Committee: Since Nicole Royal (chair) was unable to attend, Marty Jeffers reported that the fall toddler event was a success.  Approximately twenty-five toddlers attended, and there will be another event in January.  The youth book club has been postponed until further notice, because the committee is determining whether the advertising was not done correctly or if there is no need for the club.  Nancy Wesson, Ria Hodgson, and Melody Valadez have been collecting prizes from different donors for the literary contest.

Nancy Wesson explained the status of collecting prizes for the literary contest.

 

Publicity Committee: Lynda Blakistone (chair) reported that the committee has been in charge of the gift-giving publicity.  Also, the newsletter is underway for the January Newsletter.

 

Budget Committee: Ruth Freeman (chair) reported that no changes had been made to the previous budget created by Lynn Long (previous chair).

 

SPECIAL REPORTS:

 

Ros Hill – October 24: Marianne Mitchell reported that approximately twenty-five people had attended the library when Ros Hill came to speak.  There was discussion about charging authors a percentage of the books or other merchandise that they sell when they visit.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

 

Sarah Willingham’s Resignation:  Marty Jeffers officially accepted Sarah Willingham’s resignation from the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library board.

 

Nominations: There was discussion about who would be nominated to take Sarah Willingham’s place on the board.  Jeffers and Steve Schubert volunteered to be in charge of nominating someone to that position.

 

Membership Committee Chairman: There was discussion about who would be the Membership Committee chairman now that Sarah Willingham has resigned.  There were no immediate volunteers, and the decision was postponed until the January meeting.

 

Donation to Library: The Friends of the Wimberley Library wishes to donate some money to the Wimberley Village Library.  Sue Byrne brought up the wish list that the library was supposed to present to the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library.  Carolyn Manning said that she would put pressure on the rest of the library’s staff to create a wish list.  Sue Byrne suggested that she email the wish list to the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library Board and they would vote by email on what they would like to donate money for.  Marty Jeffers motioned that the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library’s donation be in the vicinity of $2500.  Nancy Wesson seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

Clifford’s Wine Bar: Clifford’s Wine Bar donated $100 to the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library because of the special day that they donate a percentage of their profits to a specific local non-profit group.  There will be another Friends of the Wimberley Village Library night at Clifford’s Wine Bar during October 2007.

 

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on January 20, 2007 at 10:00 AM. 

 

Motion: Steve Schubert motioned that Ruth Freeman be enabled to sign checks for the Friends of the Wimberley Village Library, and represent the organization in dealings with any bank, the State Comptroller, and with any other organization, conducting any audit of its finances.  Sue Byrne seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

 

Christmas Party: There will be a Christmas party at Marty Jeffers’ house on December 9, 2006 at 6:30 PM.

 

The Friends of the Wimberley Village Library adjourned at 1:50 PM.
